He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society, the UK national science academy comprising the most eminent scientists. He has consulted widely for the pharmaceutical, chemical, agrochemical and food industries and has also acted as an expert consultant in patent litigation matters.

Professor Pattenden received his bachelor degree in Chemistry from Brunel University and his PhD from Queen Mary College, University of London. He was awarded a Doctor of Science degree (higher doctorate) from the University of London in 1990.

He researches in the broad area of design and development of novel organic synthesis methods, addressing the total synthesis of natural products of biological and medicinal importance. Publishing over 450 peer reviewed papers, he was, from 1988 to 1996, the Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham and, from 1997 to 2003, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Vice President) for Research.

Professor Pattenden has served on numerous committees and panels, including as President of the Perkin Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry (1995-1997). He has also been the Editor and a member of editorial advisor boards of several organic chemistry journals worldwide, including J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Transactions 1.

His contributions have been recognised by numerous awards including the 1997 Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Natural Product Chemistry and the Hugo Müller Lectureship of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2000.
