As well as being the Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at the University of Nottingham, Professor Roberts is also the director of the Nottingham Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre and a director of Molecular Profiles. He has over 20 years’ experience in advanced nanoscale analysis of pharmaceuticals and biomaterials.

He received his bachelor of Science degree and PhD in Physics from Imperial College London, before joining the University of Nottingham in 1990. He currently sits on the editorial advisory board for Pharmaceutical Technology Europe and was a chairman of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Analytical Division, Analytical Biosciences Group.

Authoring over 220 peer reviewed papers, Professor Roberts has supervised 63 PhD students and mentored more than 30 postdoctoral fellows. His research is focused on the application of nanoscale analysis to fundamental and applied aspects of pharmaceutical formulation, drug delivery and biomolecular structure and function.

Professor Roberts is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, member of the Institute of Physics and an associate member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has been a recipient of a number of awards, including the 1999 Lilly Prize for Pharmaceutical Excellence. He was one of the scientists recognised in the 2003 GSK International Achievement award which was jointly awarded to the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis, University of Nottingham and Molecular Profiles.

In 2007 he was recognised as part of both Molecular Profiles and the University’s Pharmacy School with the honour of two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in the category of Innovation – the highest UK business accolade.
